  1. Do not update information in an email if email was not initiated by you. Only change information if you initiate the change.
  2. Use variations on several passwords rather than using the same password for all.
  3. Download freeware only from downloads.com or Snapfiles.com.
  4. When deleting pop-up ads, click on X at top corner, not within the window.
  5. Use a separate credit card just for internet shopping. Do not use a debit card. Https before the address and TRUSTe are usually safe.
  6. Use only your cell phone number when a phone number is requested.
  7. Monitor your bank and credit card accounts regularly.
  8. Open credit card junk US mail before tossing to see if important information is inside. If so, shred it.
  9. Order a copy of your credit report from one of the 3 credit agencies every 4 months. Go to www.annualcreditreport.com or 877-322-8228 for free annual copy.
  10. If you will not be requesting credit any time soon, It is possible to initiate a credit freeze, which prevents thieves from opening new accounts in your name.
  11. Do not carry your social security card.
  12. Shred any document with personal information on it before tossing.
